Loblaw's is putting infants at risk
Attention:
Mr. Galen Weston
Chairman and President
George Weston Ltd.
Dear Mr Weston,
It is truly troublesome to see Loblaw's offering discounted and free samples of Commercially Manufactured baby milk. Loblaw is well aware of its obligations under the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.
Loblaw's website pledges:
- “Loblaw is on a journey to become the best retailer in Canada once again. We are four years into a renewal program that is transforming our business and our culture. Although challenged by economic circumstances and increasingly competitive forces, we are making good progress while upholding our core values and embedding a firm commitment to corporate social responsibility. Our goal is to meet the needs of today while preparing to address the social impacts facing Canada in the future.”
Loblaw's needs to recognize it’s moral and social responsibilities to Canadian parents, mothers and children. If Loblow's truly want to take a leadership role as a Canadian food retailer, it must comply with the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and World Health Assembly Resolutions on infant and young child feeding. The health and wellbeing of Canadian mothers and children deserve the safeguards of the International Code and the critical health protection that breastfeeding provides.
On my personal part I will boycott Loblaw's until I personally see a change and will encourage all friends and colleagues to do the same. I will request all members of INFACT Quebec and other health professionals to also write and express their concerns. This email is also being copied to my federal member of parliament the Honourable Thomas Mulcair.
I trust Loblow's will do the right thing and abide by the international code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and World Health Assembly Resolutions on infant and young child feeding.
Respectfully yours,
Carole Dobrich
President INFACT Quebec
